Custom Printed Wax Paper Bags

Wax paper bags are flat or gusseted pouches in dry wax paper, open at the top, that take a cookie, a sandwich half or a pastry in one motion. Printed with your mark, each bag goes out of the window as a small piece of your brand instead of plain kraft.

What Are Wax Paper Bags?

Wax paper bags are open-top bags made from dry wax paper, usually kraft or white, with a serrated or straight mouth and sometimes a gusset. They hold cookies, pastries, sandwiches and dry snacks for counter service. Print goes on the outside; the inside stays unprinted.

Where a wax paper bag beats a wrapped sheet

A sheet needs a fold. A bag needs a hand. When a line is ten deep at a cookie counter, the bag wins because a new hire can fill it right the first time. The item drops in, the top folds once, done.

Cookie shops, donut counters, bagel stores and sandwich delis buy wax paper bags for exactly that reason. Food trucks use them for a single empanada or a hand pie that the customer eats while walking. Concession stands use the gusseted version for popcorn and soft pretzels.

The unprinted kraft bags in the first photo are what most shops use now. A printed run is the same bag with your mark on the front, filled the same way. See the wax paper and food bags range for bags built for hotter items.

Kraft or white dry wax for your wax paper bags?

Dry wax is the right stock for a bag that holds something sweet or buttery. It has a soft hand, a faint sheen and it releases glaze. The second photo shows the translucent look of kraft dry wax: you can just make out the gusset through the panel.

Kraft dry wax hides a butter spot and suits a rustic bakery or a barbecue stand. White dry wax is brighter, so spot colors and full-color art look truer on it. A pink or a sky blue will read correctly on white and go muddy on kraft.

Grease-resistant kraft or white is available for a bag that holds fried items, like a mozzarella stick or a churro. It is less translucent than dry wax and keeps the outside drier for longer in a closed carry-out sack.

What goes in a 6 x 6, 6 x 8 or 7 x 9 wax paper bag?

Bag sizes are listed width by height, mouth open. The item should sit inside with an inch to spare at the top so the fold closes without squashing it.

  • 6 x 6: one large cookie, a brownie square, a single donut, a macaron set
  • 6 x 8: a bagel with schmear, a sandwich half, two cookies, a croissant
  • 7 x 9: a whole sub cut in half and stacked, a soft pretzel, a stuffed pastry, a hot dog in its bun
  • Custom: taller bags for baguette halves or wider bags for a wedge of focaccia, quoted on request

A deli that sells halves should start with 6 x 8. A cookie counter can run 6 x 6 and nothing else. The full list of sizes we cut includes the matching sheets.

Flat or gusseted: which wax bag opening suits your counter?

StyleHow it opensBest for
Flat bagTwo panels, serrated or straight mouth, lies flat on the counterCookies, bagels, sandwich halves, anything flat
Gusseted bagSide folds let the bottom open squarePretzels, popcorn, a stacked sandwich, two pastries at once
Flat with a windowFlat bag with a cut-out on one panelShowing a decorated cookie through the front, quoted on request

The gusseted bag in the second photo stands up on its own when it is full. A flat bag needs to lean on something. If your counter has a display rack, flat bags hang better; if staff set bags on a tray, gusseted ones stay upright.

Printing one panel or the whole bag

A bag has a front panel that stays flat even when it is full. That makes a single centered mark more useful here than on a sheet. Put the logo in the top third of the front, above where a cookie sits, and it is the first thing the customer sees.

A repeat pattern across both panels works for a brand with a motif, and it hides the fold crease better. White ink on kraft is a strong one-color choice; two spot colors on white dry wax look like a classic bakery bag.

Food-safe soy and water-based inks go on the outside only, so the inside that touches the food stays plain. Pantone references are matched from a number or a printed sample. The guide to spot colors and repeats explains coverage on absorbent stock.

What happens to a wax paper bag around something warm?

A warm cookie or a just-fried churro steams inside a closed bag. Dry wax lets a little of that moisture through, which keeps the crust from going soggy. Leave the fold loose for anything that has to stay crisp.

Dry wax is for cold and warm holds, not for the oven or microwave. Do not send a customer home with instructions to reheat the bag; tell them to tip the item out first.

Cold items from a fridge case sweat in a bag for a minute or two. Kraft dry wax shows that condensation less than white, and the item itself is unaffected.

How wax paper bags are packed, stored and reordered

Bags ship flat in labeled cases, usually in bundles of a few hundred. A bundle lives in a shallow box or dispenser under the counter so staff pull one at a time. Keep opened cases away from steam and the dish pit.

A reorder is the bag size and a quantity. Your approved proof stays on file, so the second run prints with no new setup unless you change the art. Count bags used on a busy day and reorder when a week of stock is left.

Need matching sheets for trays? The printed wax paper sheets page shows the same stocks in flat squares, which can print from the same file.

Things that go wrong with a first wax paper bag order

  1. Picking 6 x 6 for a bagel. It fits, but the top will not fold. Go 6 x 8.
  2. Ordering white dry wax for buttery items that sit in the bag for an hour. A spot shows; kraft hides it.
  3. Printing a logo too low on the front panel. The item covers it. Keep the mark in the top third.
  4. Sending a JPG with a white box around the logo. On kraft the box prints as a pale square. Send a transparent PNG or a vector.
  5. Skipping the stock sample. Kraft dry wax looks darker in hand than on a screen; ask for a sheet before approving.
