What Are Burrito Wrapping Paper?

Burrito wrapping paper is a 12 x 15 or larger grease-resistant sheet rolled around a filled tortilla, ends tucked, to keep it closed and clean to hold. It stands in for foil on most counters. We print it with a repeat on the outside face, or supply it plain.

Burrito Wrapping Paper for Taquerias and Fast-Casual Lines

Burrito wrapping paper is a large grease-resistant sheet that rolls tightly around a filled tortilla and keeps it closed, warm and clean to hold. It replaces or lines foil, and it is the sheet that carries your name out the door in a to-go bag.

Taquerias, breakfast-burrito trucks, fast-casual bowl-and-burrito counters and campus food windows all roll in paper. A commissary that builds a few hundred breakfast burritos before dawn wraps each one in a printed sheet so the label, the brand and the hold all come from one piece of paper.

Which Stock Holds Up to Salsa and Rice?

A burrito is the wettest thing on a deli paper line. Rice, beans, salsa and sour cream all push moisture into the sheet from the inside while steam softens it from the outside. Grease-resistant stock is the only sensible choice; it stays whole and the print stays readable through a to-go hold.

White grease-resistant, as in the second photo, gives a clean look and takes gray, black or any brand color. Kraft grease-resistant, as in the first, hides the odd salsa spot and suits a rustic or smokehouse menu. Dry wax is too soft for a burrito; it tears at the tuck and lets sauce through.

Bleached white without the grease-resistant face is fine for a dry breakfast burrito handed over a counter, but we do not recommend it for anything sauced. The stock comparison for dry wax and grease-resistant goes into the difference.

What Sheet Size Rolls a Full Burrito?

The sheet has to go around the burrito at least once and a half, with enough length left to tuck both ends. Measure the rolled burrito, not the tortilla.

Sheet sizeBurrito it wrapsNotes
12 x 1210-inch tortilla, standard burritoSingle wrap with short tucks; good for breakfast burritos
12 x 1512-inch tortilla, the common fast-casual sizeRoll on the 15-inch side for a double layer and full tucks
15 x 15Oversized or double-wrapped burritosEnough paper for a foil-free roll on the biggest portion

Most taquerias should start with 12 x 15. It is the smallest sheet that goes around a 12-inch tortilla twice, and the second layer is what keeps salsa off the bag.

Tone-on-Tone Repeats and Band Labels

The first photo shows the strongest look for a burrito: a one-color repeat in a brown slightly darker than the kraft sheet, then a band around the middle. The repeat covers the whole roll so the brand reads from every side. The band in the photo is a separate printed label; mention it on the quote form if you want one quoted alongside the sheets.

On white stock, a gray or black word repeat reads the same way with a lighter feel. We print 1 to 3 spot colors on either stock, or full color on white, always on the outside face. A single centered logo does not suit a burrito; the roll hides most of the sheet and the logo lands on the underside.

Keep repeat type bold. Fine lettering softens on absorbent stock and a burrito's steam softens it further, so the proof thickens thin strokes before you approve. The artwork files and line weights page shows what survives.

Rolling, Tucking and the Peel-Down Eat

Lay the sheet square, burrito at the near edge with the seam down. Roll once, fold both ends in, roll to the far edge and press the seam. Grease-resistant stock holds that last press without tape for a short hold; a sticker or band locks it for delivery.

The customer tears or peels the top down an inch at a time, and the paper below keeps the bottom half together. That is the reason burrito paper is wrapped tight: a loose roll lets the filling slide out at the first bite.

Train the roll station to wrap with the printed face out and the repeat running along the length of the burrito. A sheet laid crooked still works, but the mark ends up on a slant across the roll, which looks careless next to a straight one in the same bag.

Hot Burritos in a To-Go Bag

A wrapped burrito keeps its heat well because the roll traps it. The downside is steam, which softens the tortilla if the bag is sealed. Leave the bag top folded, not stapled shut, and the paper vents enough to keep the tortilla from going soggy.

For delivery, a grease-resistant sheet keeps the bag clean and a band or sticker tells the driver which burrito is which. Foil keeps heat a little longer, but it blocks steam completely and leaves a wet tortilla, which is why many kitchens have moved to paper or paper over foil. Our guide on how restaurants use printed wraps covers the switch.

Should Burrito Paper Replace Foil?

For most counters, yes, and for the rest, paper goes over the foil. Paper on its own holds a dry-side burrito for a counter or a short walk and lets steam out. Paper over foil suits a heavy wet burrito that rides in a car, with the printed sheet still on the outside.

Do not put a paper-wrapped burrito in the oven or microwave to reheat. The sheet is for the hold and the hand, not for cooking.

One more point in favor of paper: it is quieter at the counter. Foil crackles, catches on the bag and shows every fingerprint, while a kraft sheet with a tone-on-tone print looks the same at the table as it did at the pass.

Burrito Wrap Errors That Cost Sales

A burrito that falls apart in the bag is a refund. These are the usual causes.

  • A 12 x 12 sheet on a 12-inch tortilla, leaving nothing to tuck.
  • Dry wax stock that tears at the tuck and bleeds salsa into the bag.
  • One centered logo on a sheet that rolls, so the mark ends up underneath.
  • Rolling loose, then sealing the bag tight, so the burrito steams and slides.
  • Hairline script in the repeat that blurs once the sheet is warm and damp.
  • Reordering only when the last carton opens, with a two-week print and delivery window.

Getting Printed Burrito Paper on Your Line

  1. Fill in the quote form with your tortilla size, the sheet size and the count; 1,000 sheets per print run is the minimum.
  2. Choose grease-resistant kraft or white and say whether you want a repeat, a corner mark or a tone-on-tone design.
  3. Send the logo as a vector PDF, AI or EPS; a photo of your menu board is enough for us to redraw a simple wordmark at no charge.
  4. Approve the free PDF proof, with any changes made free until you sign off.
  5. Printing takes 4 to 6 business days, then free tracked delivery lands at any US address in 2 to 3 business days; you pay by invoice after approval.

Misprinted or damaged sheets reported within 10 days with photos are reprinted or refunded. Set the logo on a real kraft or white sheet on the Design Your Deli Paper page first if you want to see how the mark sits on each stock.

Burrito Wrapping Paper Questions

The questions we answer most weeks. Pick a topic, open a row.

What size burrito wrapping paper fits a 12-inch tortilla?

12 x 15, rolled on the 15-inch side so the sheet goes around twice with ends to tuck. 15 x 15 is the step up for oversized rolls.

Can I order burrito paper in kraft and white from one proof?

Yes, but each stock is a separate print run with its own 1,000 sheet minimum, and the proof shows the mark on each.

Can burrito wrapping paper be used for wraps and gyros as well?

Yes. Anything rolled in a tortilla or flatbread wraps the same way; use 12 x 12 for lighter wraps and 12 x 15 for gyros with sauce, or see the plain food wrapping sheets for gyros.
